Department of Psychiatry, Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise
The Department of Psychiatry (DOP), Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, is the acute psychiatric unit for the Laois/Offaly Mental Health Services.
Kelbuild carried out several works which consisted of upgrading five rooms within the Dept of Psychiatry including the construction of a purpose-built Seclusion Room and all associated facilities.
All these works were carried out in a live hospital environment, which brought the added responsibility of working within this specific department. Strict control was implemented with constant monitoring of site for access, loose material, and tools. All demolitions, material deliveries, and access to site was carefully planned with designated routes and times implemented to create a safe environment for both the patients and personnel onsite.
All refurbishment works included the upgrading of the existing rooms to a full anti-ligature specification which is designed in such a way that deters service users from causing themselves or others any harm. These included all rooms & ensuites, washrooms, specific purpose-built wardrobes, mechanical & electrical upgrades, and specialist windows. All materials which were used were all special orders due to them being anti ligature and fitted by specialist to ensure there could be no harm inflicted to any service member or staff on completion.
Also, a highly specified Seclusion room facility was installed which included the installation of safety padding, full anti-ligature specification, monitoring cameras, nurse’s station, consultants’ room and a designated accessible toilet and shower room.
